Imphal, Aug 8 (UNI) Manipur's Education minister L Jayentakumar escaped an attempt on his life when unidentifed guerrillas opened fire on his convoy near Moreh in Chandel district last night, police said today.

The minister was returning Imphal along with a large numbers of MLAs including Ratankumar, Lokeshwore of the Congress party and some government officials like Transport Commissioner H Ibocha and Transport Director T Sitlhou. The convoy had 20 vehicles.

The security personnel escorting the minister and MLAs fired back in which some ultras might have died, police added.

After the firing the VIPs were safely escorted to a nearby military camp and later driven back to the state capital. There were no injuries on this side, police said.

Elsewhere, suspected ultras triggered a terror at Bishenpur district by hurling several bombs injuring two persons including a 14-year-old boy yesterday.

The outlaws had also thrown several bombs at the residences of some senior government officials there, police added. Police said the attacks were to create terror among the government officials for their refusal to meet the demands of a militant group.

Militants also exploded some crude bombs at Uripok, Imphal East, last night. However, there was no injury in the blasts.
