5, including 4 'Kanwarias' killed in UP

Bhadohi/Lucknow, Aug 7 (UNI) A 'kanwaria' was killed, while a boy crushed to death under a police jeep, when the cops resorted to firing and lathicharge to disperse an unruly mob protesting the death of three 'kanwarias' here this morning.

'Kanwarias' are Shiv devotees and undertake pilgrimage during the ongoing holy month of 'shrawan'.

Special Secretary (Home) Rajendra Prasad said three devouts were crushed under the wheels of a truck on the Allahabad-Varanasi National Highway.

An angry mob of 'kanwarias' vandalised a police station and torched police vehicles. Almost 12 other vehicles were also set ablaze.

About 12 cops were wounded, when the agitators indulged in stone pelting.

To control the situation, police first lathicharged the mob, in which at least 20 of them were wounded.

When the 'kanwarias' unrelented, police resorted to firing, killing Ajit Kumar Chaubey on the spot. Meanwhile, a police vehicle turned turtle, in which a 10 year-old boy Aftab was crushed to death.

Police in strength had been deployed to prevent fresh violence.

UNI
