Titanium: CPI forms team to get public feedback
Chennai, Aug 7 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) today announced the constitution of a 'fact finding team' to elicit the views of the local people in connection with the setting up of the titanium dioxide project in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts.
The team, headed by party National Administrative Committee member and former State Secretary R Nallakannu, would interact with the people in the two districts tomorrow, a party release said.
The team would comprise state executive members V Duraimanickam, R Mutharasan, Tuticorin district Secretary Ayyalusamy, former MLA R Shanmugavelu and Kanyakumari district Secretary K Chandrababu, the release said.
After the state government entered into a MoU with Tata Steel for setting up the Rs 2,500 crore project, there were apprehensions in the minds of the local people that the project, if allowed to be set up, would affect their livelihood. Following widespread opposition to the project, the state governemnt had decided to take it up only after ascertaining the views of the public in the two districts.
