Flood havoc in Bastar

Jagdalpur, Aug 7 (UNI) Normal life remained paralysed due to incessant rain for the last two days in Bastar division of Chhattisgarh and all major rivers and rivulets were in spate affecting road traffic and inundating many villages, official sources said today.

Water level was rising in Indrawati, Godawari and Shabari rivers threatening several hundred villages. About 15 cm rainfall was recorded here in the past 24 hours, official sources said.

An alert was sounded across the tribal-dominated Bastar district, where the Indrawati river had crossed the danger mark here this afternoon. Residents of low lying areas on the river banks had been shifted to safer places, District Collector Ganesh Shankar Mishra said.

Two villages- Bhejripadar and Nadi-Bodna- were marooned and motor boat had been sent from Nagarnar to rescue about 400 people, Mr Mishra said.

Vehicular movement on Jagdalpur-Raipur road was disrupted since last night as water was flowing about five feet over the culverts on Jugani and Makadighat rivulets and Bastar was cut off from state capital Raipur.

Traffic on Kondagaon-Narayanpur road, Bhanupratappur-Pakhanjur road, Geedam-Dantewada road, Minrachal-Bhopalpatnam road also remained suspended due to flooding of rivers and rivulets.
