Brinda calls for unity among women's organisation
New Delhi, Aug 7(UNI) Concerned over growing atrocities on women, CPI(M) firebrand leader Brinda Karat today gave a clarion call for all women organisations to come on one platform to raise their voice on issues like dowry and female foeticide.
Inaugurating the ninth state conference of All India Democratic Women's Association(AIDWA), Delhi State Committee here, she said it is important to remain united while raising issues related to women, be it the question of basic infrastructure facilities in Delhi's slums or problems faced by Dalit women.
Ms Karat, who is also the vice-president of AIDWA said the success achieved by the organisation in its journey of 27 years was remarkable as it had kept its promise of working on programmes based on their needs and requirements and provided platforms to struggle against exploitation and hardships of women.
Expressing serious concern over female foeticide cases, she urged the women organisations to take a serious note of the issue. ''It is a serious issue as it hits women directly.
Talking about another major social evil -- dowry -- Ms Karat said the rate of dowry cases is increasing due to the growing materialism and consumerism which is causing increase in the foeticide cases.
Ms Karat also asked the women organisations to keep their movement strong to check communal powers and the capitalist motives of US.
The three-day conference was joined by various women organisations like YWCA, Action India and 350 delegates of the organisation from across the state.
Ms Karat called upon the activists and women organisations by saying that their struggle would bring major social, cultural and political change for the nation.
