Protesting Yuba Morcha activists lathicharged
Guwahati, Aug 6 (UNI) At least two Bharatiya Janata Yuba Morcha (BYJM) activists were injured today when police charged batons to disperse the protestors at Dibrugarh.
The BYJM workers were staging a demonstration demanding detection and deportation of the Bangladeshi nationals from the state. Shouting slogans against the Chief Minister, the government and the organisations working in the interest of the illegal migrants, hundreds of the BJYM activists, including women, gheraoed the Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner's office before blocking the main road for several hours.
Failing to pacify the protesters, police opened mild lathicharge, injuring at least two youth leaders.
BJYM state general secretary Ujjal Kashyap said the protesters later submitted a memorandum to the DC, demanding eviction of the suspected Bangladeshis, who had settled in the sar areas of the Brahmaputra in the district.
Taking umbrage at the police action, Mr Kashyap also said they were not satisfied with the response of the administration in handling the vexed illegal migrants problem.
The youth wing of the BJP had earlier served a 15-day ultimatum to the illegal migrants to leave the state or face their ire. District units of the BJYM also demonstrated at their respective headquarters across the state today, protesting the alleged inaction on the part of the government towards the flow of illegal migrants to the state.
