Chennai, Aug 5: Marumalarchi DMK General Secretary Vaiko today appealed to the Tamil Nadu Government to take steps to prevent the Karnataka government from constructing a check dam across river Thenpennai as it would affect the people of the state. In a statement here, Mr Vaiko took stong exception to State PWD Minister Duraimurugan's reported statement that the Karnataka government was not constructing any check dam and they were only undertaking expansion works on the existing bridge there.

He recalled that Mr Duraimurugan had earlier denied the reports that Andhra Pradesh government was making attempts to construct a dam across river Palar.

But now the Andhra Pradesh government was making all out efforts to build a dam across river Palar, he pointed out.

He wanted the Tamil Nadu government to depute an official team to Karnataka to ascertain the truth and prevent that state from making another vexed issue similar to Cauveri water row.

Mr Vaiko strongly condemned the Tamil Nadu Government's silence on the water sharing issue and the various attempts by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala to deny Tamil Nadu, its due share of water.
