Mumbai, Aug 5 (UNI) Private carrier Jet Airways has become the first airline in the country to have smart security system for passengers flying to the United States.

The high-tech scanning system for air passengers was introduced for the first time by Jet Airways at the launch of its maiden flight to the United States via its hub Brussels from Mumbai here yesterday.

''The system enables us to scan a passenger flying to the US, whether he is in the 'no-fly-passenger' (NFP) list of the US or not'', a Jet Airways security official told reporters.

There are some 80,000 persons world over on the US watch list.

Earlier on also, we had been maintaining a watch on such passengers, but only manually as we would check with the US authorities whether he was a NFP or not through other technological means. However, after the introduction of this technology, we can scan all these 80,000 names within seconds,'' he said.

According to him, the system was first introduced by the US-based airlines in the aftermath of September 11 terrorist attack on the twin towers.

At present, a couple of airlines like Delta, Virginia Atlantic, and Alatalia etc are using this smart security system to scan the journey and other details of the passengers flying/in and out of the US. ''We are the first one in India to arm ourself with such a technology,'' he added.

Earlier, the airlines launched its maiden flight connecting India with the US, with daily flights from Mumbai to New York (Newark) via its hub in Brussels. The flight took off from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Terminus at 0210 hrs this morning.
