AP: Boy dies after falling into borewell

Ongole, Aug 5: A six-year-old boy who accidentally fell into a borewell, died this morning after a 46-hour operation failed to rescue him in Botlasunduram village in Prakasam district.

Kartik fell into the borewell while playing on Friday. His body was retrieved today, police said.

Authorities had dropped an oxygen pipe and dug a parallel pit to save him but failed in their efforts.

The District Collector and the Superintendent of Police were monitoring the developments till this morning.

The rescue operations were impeded due to rains and several boulders that had to be blasted in the parallel pit.

Police said the boy died of asphyxiation inside the 30-feet borewell.

The Andhra Pradesh Government announced an exgratia of Rs 70,000, 2.5 acres of land, a house and a government job to the child's mother.

Three boys have died in similar incidents in the state where shallow borewels were left uncovered.
