Police solve Rs 10 lakh robbery case within 72 hrs

Mumbai, Aug 4 (UNI) The police today claimed to have solved a Rs 10 lakh robbery case with the arrest of two people within 72 hours since the crime was committed.

Addressing mediapersons here, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Brijesh Singh said two persons -- Machhindra Dagdu Chavan and Dilip Lalu Kadam -- were nabbed from Badlapur in the neighbouring Thane district last night for allegedly committing the robbery at the General Post Office (GPO) here.

He said Kadam, who was working as peon in the GPO since the past 12-13 years, robbed Rs 10,10,636.50 from the safe of GPO on July 31 with a duplicate key that he had prepared. Out of the total amount, Rs 9,88,270 was recovered from them and remaining Rs 22,366.50 was spent by the duo in travelling and beer bars.

Elaborating about the incident Mr Singh said, Kadam and Chavan were close friends and used to reside in the same colony at Badlapur.

They were planning for the robbery since long.

The duo was produced before 38th Metropolitan Magistrate this afternoon, who remanded them to 14-day police custody, he added.
