Medha Patkar released from jail

Indore, Aug 4 (UNI) After being kept in custody for nine days, Narmada Bachao Andolan(NBA) leader Medha Patkar was released from jail here this morning.

Her release followed granting of bail by two courts in Badwani and a court in Alirajpur yesterday. She also called off hunger strike started four days ago alleging harassment.

Ms Patkar was arrested from Badwani on July 25 during a ''Satyagraha'' over the rehabilitation of the people displaced due to Sardar Sarovar project on the Narmada river.

''The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh wanted to crush the NBA,'' Ms Patkar told reporters after her release.

There was rampant corruption in the rehabilitation work and bogus registry of land worth Rs 40 crore had been done, she added.
