Floods disrupt life in Miao

Itanagar, Aug 4 (UNI) Incessant rains have increased the water level of all the rivers and tributaries above the danger level in Miao sub-division in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Official sources said here today the rivers, Noa-Dihing, Namchik and Buri Dehing and their tributaries, were in spate adding the forest colony of Namchik and some government quarters of Kharsang town had been totally submerged. About 40 families had been shifted to safer places.

Besides, almost 76 houses in the Bordumsa circle were submerged on July 27 causing huge loss of property and livestock. However, no casualties had been reported so far.

Meanwhile, fatal incidents due to snakebites had been reported from various parts of the Bordumsa sub-division. A man and his son from Kherimbisa village died due to snakebite, sources said.

Standing crops as well as horticultural products in low-lying areas had been destroyed. Thick layers of sand, silt and pebbles had covered many agricultural fields, damaging irrigation channels and public property, besides road transport, sources added.

The district administration, anticipating outbreak of water-borne diseases and epidemics, sounded red alert in the area. Special directives were given to the medical department and stock of medicines were replenished.

A circle and sub-division level assessment committee had been constituted to assess the losses incurred during the floods. A flood situation monitoring cell had also been set up at Miao, sources added.
