Devotees break coconuts on head for fulfillment of wish

Karur, Tamil Nadu, Aug 4 (UNI) In a fit of religious fervour, as many as 1000 devotees, mostly women, had coconuts broken on their heads at Shri Mahalakshmi Amman Temple on the occasion of ''Aadi Perukku'' festival, near here, today.

The unique ritual was performed by the devotees, praying for the fulfillment of their wish.

As the temple priest broke the coconuts on the heads of the devotees, a few of them suffered bleeding injuries.

However, going by the tradition, the temple priests applied turmeric powder on the injured heads.

Earlier, the temple priest performed special poojas and other rituals to the presiding deity Mahalakshmi Amman.

Thousands thronged the temple to witness the coconut breaking ritual.

Later, the broken coconuts were distributed as ''Prasadam'' to the devotees.
