Trekking team to clean Gomukh

Dehradun, Aug 3 (UNI) The Uttarakhand Government is planning to chalk out a programme for cleaning the Gomukh, the origin of the Ganga of Garbages Chief Minister Maj Gen (Retd) Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri said today.

Mr Khanduri said that a trekking team under the supervision of district administration and support of the Nehru Mountaineering Institute, Uttarkashi would be specially constituted to carry out the cleaning works. The team would visit Gomukh regularly in tourist season and collect wase from the river and bring it down for safe disposal. He has asked officer-in-charge Adventure Activities, Uttarkashi, to prepare a programme for the same and submit it to the government. He also advocated spreading awreness among tourists in keeping the Gomukh area clean.

Secretary, Sripanch Mandir Samiti, Gangotri, told UNI in a telephonic conversation that Kanwarias who come to Gomukh, change their clothes and discard them there. He rued that Kanwarias, tourists and mountaineers come to Gomukh, leave empty bottles, polythene bags and other disposable items polluting the very sourcs of the river.

Meanwhile, Ramchandra Bhardwaj, In-charge Adventure Activities, Uttarkashi, said that an 11 member Tracking Team would leave to conquer the 7065 feet high Satopanth, the highest peak in Uttarakhand on August 5 from Uttarkashi. He said the team would also collect wastes from Gomukh and other camp sites.

The campaign is slated to end by August 21-22, he said. The team was today presented a flag by the Chief Minister at Secretariat here.
