Irregularities in MDM programme unearthed.

Sambalpur, Aug 3 (UNI) Bargarh district collector Harihara Panigrahi has ordered a Social Welfare Officer (SWO) to deposit Rs 75,000 with the Orissa government for his involvement in the mid day Meal(MDM) scam.

Mr Panigrahi ordered this after detecting anomalies of nearly Rs two crore in the MDM programme in the district and fixed responsibility on the programme-in-charge.

He had directed former district social welfare officer Ganeswar Panda to deposit Rs 75,000 with the government. The officer during his tenure from 1996-2004 had allegedly misappropriated Rs two crore from the programme.

Pimary investigation revealed that he had shown Rs 75,000 expenditure on spices for the mid day meal which the collector said was a blatant lie.

The anomalies were unearthed during enquiry from different schools of the district availing MDM benefit and verification of records, official sources said.
