11 more deaths with deluge in central Bangladesh

Dhaka, Aug 3 (UNI) Eleven more flood-related deaths were reported today raising the toll to 65 as the current flood situation worsened in central parts of Bangladesh with swelling of major rivers, officials said.

An official of the flood control room said some 700,0000 people of 150,0000 families have been affected by the flood waters that hit 206 sub-districts in 38 districts causing colossal damage to property and standing crops.

The official said more than 20,0000 affected men, women and children took shelter in 903 centers.

The floodwaters damaged standing crops on more than 58 acres of lands fully or partially.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center says the overall flood situation in country's central parts, including eastern part of Dhaka, may worsen further as the major rivers in the Ganges-Padma basin continued to rise.

A bulletin of the Center said the Ganges-Padma continued to rise at all points and was flowing 150 cm and 106 cm above the danger level at Goalundo and Bhagyakul respectively this morning. The Kaliganga at Taraghat was still rising and was flowing 139 cm above the danger mark.

It said the major rivers were flowing above danger level in 27 water level monitoring stations this morning. Of these rivers, water level rose at 39 stations and fell at 22 stations.

The bulletin said prevailing flood situation in the districts of Manikganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Rajbari, Madaripur, Shariatpur, and Dohar and Nawabganj upazilas of Dhaka district are likely to aggravate further.
