Australia can't summon Haneef again: Lawyer

Mysore, Aug 1: The Australian Government cannot issue summons again to Dr Mohammed Haneef, the Indian doctor freed after being charged in connection with the failed attack on Glasgow airport, his Australian lawyer said Peter Russo today said.

The Australian lawyers clarification came in the wake of a statement by Australian Federal Police that the investigation into Dr Haneef's involvement in terror attack was not yet over.

The lawyer, who came to India along with Dr Haneef, after being released by the Australian Federal Police, on Sunday is in the city on his way to a resort near H D Kote in the district for a visit.

Speaking to reporters who met him at the residence Imran Siddiqui, a cousin of Haneef's wife, he said the Indian doctor had cleared of all charges and there was no ground left for the Australian government to issue summons to him again.

As the Australian authorities had cancelled the visa of Haneef, a team of five lawyers head by Steven Keimse, Senior Counsel, would handle the legal proceedings in Australia. As Dr Haneef was proved innocent now, Australian government would definitely not review that decision, he assured.

Referring to the news that the Australian Immigration Minister was aware of the secret chat between Haneef and Sabeel, Russo said that it was an old story and there was nothing serious about it, it was a closed chapter and there was no need to give a fresh meaning for all that now.

"It is far from truth that Haneef sympathised with Kafeel and Sabeel, his second cousins allegedly connected in the Glasgow attack. He only showed concern on his parents and relatives but never on the two cousins, if media persons had carried the news that way it was a wrong judgment.

Regarding Chief Minister's assurance to provide a government job, Haneef has not spoken to me, however, it is true that Haneef desires to continue working in Australia, he added.
