Italian filmmaker Antonioni dies at 94

ROME, July 31 (Reuters) Michelangelo Antonioni, one of the most famous Italian filmmakers of all time, died late yesterday at the age of 94, city officials in Rome said today.

Antonioni's career, that spanned more than six decades, included Oscar-nominated ''Blowup'' and the internationally acclaimed ''L'Avventura'' (The Adventure).

One of the most international and politically minded of modern Italian film-makers, Antonioni achieved fame in the 1960s and early 70s with a series of highly individual films.

After several years working with some of the greatest names of the Italian postwar neo-realist movement, Antonioni won world-wide acclaim with a succession of triumphs exploring what he saw as the emotional sterility of modern society.
