New Delhi, July 27 (UNI) The Visakhapatnam-based public sector company, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) today signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) for setting up a Lean Gas (Blast Furnace Gas) Combined Cycle Power Plant through a 50:50 Joint Venture (JV).

The MoU for the 150 Mega Watts (MW) capacity power plant at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh was signed by the Chairman and Managing Director of RINL, P K Bishnoi and Chairman and Managing Director, NTPC Limited T Sankaralingam, said a statement.

The power required by RINL shall be made available by the JV company at the bus bar of the project for off-take by RINL with an option to other consumers.

The JV Company shall be established as ''NTPC-RINL Power Company Ltd''. NTPC shall have the management control of the proposed JV and its Chairman shall be nominated by NTPC.

The average power demand for RINL at 6.3 million-ton stage is estimated to be 418 MW and the present generation of 226 MW meets its present requirement.

The proposed Gas Turbine Combined Cycle Power Project (GTCC) unit would produce 150 MW. The benefits of GTCC technology are higher efficiency in terms of more power generation and clean environment in the context of global warming.

The GTCC technology is the latest available for utilising the low calorific value lean gases and it envisages efficient utilisation of large quantity of surplus gas available at the steel plant.
