IT dept opens 40 spl counters for IT returns

Chennai, July 27: The Income Tax (IT) department today opened 40 special counters at its office to cope with the last minute rush following the July 31 deadline for filing of returns by salaried class for the assessment year 2007-08.

The special return receipt counters at the Aayakar Bhawan here would remain open till July 31 between 1000 hrs and 1730 hrs on all days, including Saturday and Sunday.

Besides, the 40 counters, there were help desks to provide answer to general queries, supply return forms and PAN verification.

Special counters were also functioning to receive PAN card applications and for the benefit of senior citizens and physically challenged.

More than 2.50 lakh tax payers were expected to file their returns over the next five days which would take the number of assessees to nearly 3.2 lakh.
