Hawara, 5 others guilty in Beant Singh assassination case

Chandigarh, July 27 (UNI) The CBI Special Court today delivered its verdict in the Beant Singh assassination case, after over 11-long years, finding Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist Jagtar Singh Hawara and five others guilty.

Hawara, the principle conspirator and head of the BKI in India alongwith his associates Gurmit Singh, Shamsher Singh, Lakhwinder Singh and Balwant Singh were found guilty of murder, attempt to murder, conspricy to murder and under the explosives act. They were found guilty under sections 302, 304, 307, 309 and the explosives act.

The verdict was pronounced by Special Judge Ravi Kumar in the high security Burial Jail here, where the accused are being held.

The quantum of sentence will be announced tomorrow by the Special Judge.

The Court also found the sixth accused, Naseeb Singh guilty under section-five of the explosives act. His quantum of sentence will also be announced tomorrow, though he has been in jail for over 11-years.

The Court however acquited Navjot Singh, as the prosecution during the trial failed to produce sufficient evidence of his involvement in the crime. He was charged by the CBI of providing shelter to the accused and assisting in assembling explosives, that killed the former chief minister and 16 others outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat on Auguist 31, 1995.

Navjot Singh has been in jail for 11-years and 11 months.
