Establish viable micro finance prog to empower women: Renuka
New Delhi, July 27 (UNI) Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury today called for devising a proper strategy to estabilish viable micro finance programmes which play a crucial role in economic impowerment of poor women.
In her keynote address on 'Micro-finance and Women Economic Empowerment' at a function organised for the SAARC region by the Rashtriya Mahila Kosh here, Ms Chowdhury said microfinance has become highly significant in empowering women through mobiliastion of asset less women to engage in self employment and income generation activites.
Pointing out that the micro finance schemes have in many instances demonstrated that the poor women are bankable and a valuable source of saving mobilisation, the Minister said it help women become a significant contributors to family welfare.
She said microfinancing address the problem of poverty alleviation, women's empowerment through increase in their income level and also control over-income and greater expenditure on welfare of women and children.
It also leads to the expansion of microenterprises and give women greater experience of the world outside home, access to information and possibilities for development of other social and political roles and changes attitude of household and community towards them.
