Asom gears up for a possible ULFA attack

Guwahati, July 26: Asom has geared up for a possible ULFA attack on the eve of the ''Martyar's Day'' of the banned outfit.

There was a lesser number of people in the markets and other favourite target areas of ULFA. The incessant rain has been other contributing factor.

''We have stepped up the security and counter insurgency operation all over Asom and we have some intelligence feedback about possible attack,'' said Asom DGP R N Mathur.

The vigilance paid off, as last night one ULFA militant was arrested in Dibrugarh while on a mission to plant a bomb somewhere in Upper Asom. He tried to escape, but was caught red-handed along with the live bomb.

Another bomb went off beneath a high tension power line carrier of Powrgrid near Salakati in Lower Asom. Fortunately, only one bomb went off, while three others attached in the three others limbs of the tower did not.

The collapse of the tower would have disrupted the power transmission to entire lower Asom.

Check points have been made every three km to deny a free run to the militants and according to DIG lower Asom G P Singh, a round the clock vigil was being maintained.

The ULFA have been attacking the vital installations and markets on the eve of their 'Martyr's Day'.
