Teledensity touches 20 per cent

New Delhi, July 25: With teledensity hovering at 20 per cent propelled by the additions in the number of mobile phone users, which went up by a record 11.72 per cent at 7.34 million in a single month of in June, the total number of phones users in the country reached 225.21 million.

A day after the government released similiar performance indicators in the telecom sector, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) through its own study has said the total numbers of telephone subscribers have reached 225.21 million at the end of June this year as compared to 218.05 million in May.

The overall tele-density has increased to 19.86 in June 2007 end as compared to 19.26 in May end.

In the wireless segment, 7.34 million subscribers have been added in June 2007 while 6.57 million subscribers were added in May 2007, registering an increase of 11.72 per cent.

The total wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA and WLL (F)) base is 185.13 million at the end of June 2007.

The wireline subscriber base stood at 40.09 million at the end of June 2007 as compared to 40.26 at the end of May 2007.

TRAI said that the subscriber data for March-07 has been modified as compared to figures indicated in previous month on the basis of quarterly reports received from service providers.

The gross addition in telephone subscribers during first quarter of FY 2007-08 is 19.35 million as compared to 13.10 million during corresponding quarter of FY 2006-07, registering a growth of 47.75 per cent.

The total Broadband connections in the country have reached 2.52 million by the end of June 2007 as against 2.46 million by May 2007, posting a growth of 2.44 per cent.

During June 2007, there is an addition of 0.06 million connections only.

In GSM, Tamil Nadu telecom circles added more than 4.7 lakh subscribers during June this year. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (East) and Uttar Pradesh (West) telecom circles added over five lakh subscribers each.
