Mrs Patil, who becomes the 12th President of India, was sworn in by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan at the Central Hall of Parliament.

This is the first time that a President-elect was sworn in the afternoon. All her eleven predecessors took oath in the forenoon.

A former Governor of Rajasthan, Mrs Patil was elected to the highest constitutional office on July 21 as the UPA-Left nominee, defeating NDA-backed Independent candidate Shekhawat by a huge margin.

Both the outgoing President and Mrs Patil came to the Parliament House together in a black limousine, escorted by the President's Bodyguards The Speaker, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan and senior officials of Parliament received Dr Kalam and Mrs Patil outside the Central hall of Parliament and escorted them inside.

The Chief Justice then administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mrs Patil, amid a thunderous applause from the august gathering.

Dressed in a cream coloured saree with green border, Mrs Patil then swapped seats with Dr Kalam before delivering her first address to the Parliamentarians.

NDA leaders, who had campaigned vigorously against Mrs Patil in the bitterly contested Presidential poll, were also present at the swearing in. Mrs Patil's family members were also there in full strength.
