Intel creates open source project for multicore development software

Bangalore, July 25 (UNI) Intel Threading Building Blocks (TBB), a popular software C++ template library that simplifies the development of software applications running in parallel (key to any multicore computer), is now available as an open source project under the GNU General Public License version two (GPLv2) with the runtime exception.

Intel TBB, as both an open source and fully supported commercial offering, made parallelism more accessible for programmers and enabled increased application performance on multi-core processors, Intel said in a release here.

This software was announced earlier in June this year to help developers efficiently create more reliable and high-performing applications to speed up a computer's responsiveness.

Intel said exposing the source code to more developers would help make TBB even more secure. The products were likely to be more securely designed as more developers from the community would look at the source and provide feedback, and reinforce that with a testing infrastructure for enhanced security.

Increasingly, the industry was witnessing a shift to multi-core processing, which had become the norm across laptops to enterprise servers to desktops. By enabling enhanced performance, reduced power consumption and more efficient simultaneous processing of multiple tasks, multi-core processors promise to improve the overall end-user experience.
