Balasore, Jul 24 (UNI) The Samajwadi Party today alleged that the Orissa government had failed to tackle the post-flood situation in worst affected Balasore district and apprehended starvation deaths if no measures were taken immediately to provide adequate relief.

Party president Baishnav Charan Parida told newsmen here that he had visited some worst affected villages in Basta, Baliapal, Bhograi and Jaleswar blocks and found people undergoing untold miseries.

''Houses were grounded, belongings washed away, road communications cut off and people cannot undertake farming due to want of seeds. They also have nothing to eat,'' he said.

People were staying under the open sky and some women had to manage with only one dress, Mr Parida said.

People had not yet received compensation for the loss of their houses even though the government had announced that the money would be given within 15 days.

Most of the PHC had no doctors and there was a shortage of medicines and anti-snake bite venom, the Samajwadi Party leader alleged.

Mr Parida demanded permanent flood control measures for the Subarnarekha river system, remedial action against rain water ingression to Bhograi from West Bengal and adequate drainage system along NH-60 in Basta to control flood in the area.
