Rupee touches fresh 9yr peak at 40.2050/USD

Mumbai, Jul 24: Rupee breached the yesterday's record nine year high of 40.23 per dollar today.

The unit touched a fresh peak of 40.2050 during the intra-day trade today on strong capital inflows and taking a cue from a globally weak dollar.

However, suspected intervention from Reserve bank is pulling the Rupee back to normal levels, which may depreciate the currency value in coming sessions, opined a dealer.

The unit, which opened at 40.27/28 per dollar, slightly higher against the previous close of 40.28/29, soon gathered momentum and is currently trading at higher margins.

Rupee also stands largely correlated with the booming Sensex, which gained nearly 250 basis points yesterday and is currently (1230hrs) trading 15,748.
