New Delhi, July 24 (UNI) External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has called for evolving mechanisms that can take the South Asian Region forward on a collective basis.

''Now is the time to take the SAARC process ahead to the implementation phase,'' Mr Mukherjee said here yesterday, on the second day of a three-day Conference of Heads of Missions in SAARC countries along with Heads of Missions in China, Iran and Myanmar.

The Conference is part of the regular process of interaction among Heads of Missions in various regions and the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Minister said the recently-concluded SAARC Summit had underlined India's collective vision of an inter-connected South Asia where there was a free flow of goods, people and ideas.

He stressed that India's foreign policy must contribute to the process of development by putting in place a conducive external security environment and by using every opportunity for economic and commercial cooperation, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said today.

''The process of globalisation has led to far-reaching changes in international affairs which require constant examination and flexibility to optimise results,'' Mr Mukherjee said.

He also urged the Heads of Missions to deliberate on emerging political, social, economic and cultural patterns in the Region to work towards putting in place a web of cooperative relationships.

The Heads of Missions called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today.
