PSCW concern over condition of women inmates

Moga, July 24 (UNI) Punjab State Commission for Women (PSCW) expressed shock over the state of affairs in Punjab jails and the conditions of women inmates lodged in the jails.

In view of deteriorating condition of the state jails and death of a woman in Jalandhar jail, PSCW Principal Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal has directed all the deputy commissioners in the state to convene a meeting of the officers concerning jails, juvenile homes, destitute homes and other such institutions falling in their respective districts and to carry out a proper assessment of the infrastructure and manpower requirements for ensuring proper boarding, lodging, health care, hygiene and security of women in these institutions.

The commission has also forwarded letters to Punjab Home affairs principal secretary, justice and DGP prisons to take appropriat action for improving the conditions of jails.

The minister for jails Hira Singh Gabria has also directed his department to prepare a detailed report of all prisons in the state and launch a massive crackdown on those inmates who are receiving VIP treatment in jails.

The department expressed that overcrowding in jails is the root cause of all the problems.
