One held while attempting to smuggle foreign currency

Chennai, July 24 (UNI) Customs officials arrested a 39-year-old Singapore-bound passenger for attempting to smuggle out foreign currency worth Rs 8.45 lakh to Singapore, at Anna International Airport here.

The arrested was identified as R Ravi hailing from Arantangi in Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu.

Customs sources said, when Ravi was checking in yesterday, they found USD 12,000, 10,000 Swiss francs, and 1,000 Euros in his suitcase.

During interrogation, he revealed that he was assigned to handover the suitcase to a person at Singapore, for which he was to be paid to and fro air ticket and Rs 5,000.

The officials remanded him to Judicial custody.

They were in search of another person who handed over the suitcase containing the foreign currencies to the arrested, the sources added.
