NHPC and OHPC to go for joint venture

Bhubaneswar, July 24 (UNI) The National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC)and Orissa Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) will jointly set up a hydropower unit in Orissa to generate power.

NHPC Chairman S K Garg today agreed to a proposal made by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in this connection.

The Chief Minister made the suggestion while a team of NHPC officials led by Mr Garg called on him this morning.

Orissa Energy Minister S N Patra told newsmen here that the site of the project would be finalised considering various things, including the total area the project, would submerge and the number of people to be displaced.

Mr Patra said the NHPC would make a detail survey and a decision about the project would be taken after that.

The Minister said during the NDA rule, the union government had decided to raise the power generation by 50,000 mw in the country.

At that time Sindol, Baitarani, lower Vansdhara and Chheligarha were identified for additional power generation and a survey was made.

Mr Patra said NHPC was also requested to undertake modernisation of six hydro power projects in the state. They were Burla, Indravati, Kolab, Chiplima and Machhkund.
