Army reviews Assam situation

Guwahati, July 23 (UNI) Top Army commanders today reviewed the situation in Assam ahead of the ULFA's 'Marty's Day' on July 27.

Defence sources said GOC of Gajraj Corps Lt General R K Chhabra chaired a conference at the Tezpur's Army base where all top commanders of the region participated.

The situation in Counter Terrorist Operations and strategy to deal with the terrorists in view of ULFA's self proclaimed Martyrs Day and likely violence was discussed.

The Corps Commander also gave away awards to Officers, JCOs and Other Ranks who have excelled in various fields.

The meeting comes a few days after two terrorists were arrested with explosives in Upper Assam's Tinsukia.

The Army had claimed that the ULFA was preparing to strike at various places on its 'Martyrs Day' and the seized explosives were meant to be used by the outfit on the day.

Meanwhile, official sources said the Army has mount offensive on the ULFA bases in the forests of Sivasagar district.

An operation was on by the Army's 66 Field Regiment to flush out the rebels.
