TN: Measures to crack down bonded labour

Tiruvallur, July 22: As part of cracking down bonded labour, punitive measures would be initiated against employers engaging the service of such labourers, district collector Ranvir Prasad said.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting on 'Prevention of overindebtedness and vulnerabilities of poor to labour exploitation' here yesterday, he said there was a significant decrease in the incidents of bonded labour. In 2004-05, there were 308 cases registered. However, it came down to 173 in 2005-06 and 36 in 2006-07.

Action was initiated against 76 employers for violating the rights of the labourers, he added.
