Pratibha Patil elected President

New Delhi, July 21 (UNI) UPA left nominee Pratibha Devisingh Patil was today officially declared elected as the 13th President of India.

Mrs Patil defeated NDA backed Independent candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat by a margin of 3,06,810 votes, Lok Sabha Secretary General and Returning Officer for the election PDT Achary told reporters here.

Mrs Patil received a total of 6,38,116 votes while Mr Shekhawat got 3,31,306 votes.

The UPA left candidate secured 65.82 per cent of the valid votes polled while Mr Shekhawat got 34.18 per cent.

Mr Achary said the total members of the electoral college were 4472 and the total number of valid votes polled was 4394. He said the total value of these valid votes came to 9,69,422.
