Guwahati, July 21 (UNI) Noted political commentator and professor of the Gauhati University Dr Noni Gopal Mahanta today urged the media of Assam to exploit the Right To Information (RTI) act to ''go to the truth.'' Addressing the annual Anjali Dutta memorial lecture, organised by the Sivsagar Press Club, Dr Mahanta also urged the media to use the ''gateways'' opened by the RTI.

He said the RTI was the ''newest independence'' to the people of India and more importantly the journalists. ''The RTI has thrown open innumerable doors hitherto closed for all media scrutiny,'' he said.

The Press Club also handed over the Ajim Hazarika memorial award to youth icon and Assamese singer Zubeen Garg besides felicitating the meritorious students of the HSCLC exams with awards.

The meeting was attended by Assam Education Minister Gautam Bora besides other dignitaries. The club also extended a package of financial assistance to ailing singer Rameswar Pathak.
