Imposter posing as Brigadier arrested

New Delhi, July 21 (UNI) The Delhi police have arrested a person who defrauded several people of thousands of rupees posing as a Brigadier.

Fifty-nine-year-old Sita Ram Gupta, a resident of Bhatinda in Punjab, was arrested by the Polcie last night on a complaint by Anil Nigam, the Manager of State Bank of India at Rail Bhawan that a person who claimed himself a Brigadier had taken Rs 56,000 from him for providing him a house being constructed by Army Welfare Housing Organisation. Anil said Gupta had demanded Rs 80,000 as booking/ advance amount from him.

Enquiry revealed that no officer in the name and Rank of Brigadier S R Gupta is posted in Delhi and that there is no such organisation as Army Welfare Housing Organisation.

A case was registered against Gupta at Vivek Vihar police station yesterday and he was arrested last night from his house in Paharganj while he was retuerning from the bank after collecting the remaining amount from the complainant.

Interrogation of the accused revealed that he used to go to bank and other government offices in uniform and explain people about the 'Housing Scheme' launched by the Army. Gupta collected advance/registration amount from the clients, fill up the forms and also provided them receipts on the letterhead of Ministry of Defence.

He admitted of having duped 15 persons. Recruitment forms of Central Police Organisation have also been recovered from his possession.

It is suspected that he might also have lured people for getting them jobs in the Central Police Organisations.
