Scientific findings should reach farmers

Coimbatore, July 20 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Agricultural Department Secretary Surjit K Chaudhary today called upon scientific community to see that their findings reach the farmers so that their productivity could be increased.

Inaugurating a two-day combined scientific workers conference at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here, he said the state government should not only take adequate steps to save the farmers from the starvation by providing more price to their produce, but also prepare them to face the competition forced by other nations.

He said farmers in the state were facing starvation and committing suicide for not getting proper price for their produce even when their natural resources were abundant, compared to countries like Australia, California and Israel where farmers earned millions in spite of facing drought.

Stressing the importance of the water management, Mr Choudhary said the state was getting an annual rainfall of a minimum of 35 to 40 inches.
