Permanent Lok Adalat to be set up in Mangalore

Mangalore, July 20 (UNI) A permanent Lok Adalat will be set up here to take up disputes relating to transport, electricity, postal and telegraph, water, sanitation and insurance issues for settlement.

Briefing the media here yesterday, Mangalore Bar Association President Monappa Bhandary said the permanent Lok Adalat would be a feather in the cap of the Bar, celebrating its 125th year.

The Adalat would be inaugurated by Karnataka High Court Judge Mr Justice V Gopalagowda, also the Executive Chairman of Karnataka State Legal Services Authority. High Court Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph would preside over the function, he said.

He said that during the Lok Adalat held from August to October 2006, 520 cases, including criminal, civil and motor vehicle cases, have been settled and a total compensation of Rs 3.31 crore had been paid in the 382 motor vehicle cases. In the Lok Adalat held on June 16, 60 cases have been settled with the insurance claim settlement of Rs 5.42 lakh, he added.
