K'taka: Permanent Lok Adalat to be established

Mangalore, July 20: For the first time in Karnataka, a permanent Lok Adalat would be established here.

Briefing the press here yesterday, Mr. Monappa Bhandary, the President of Mangalore Bar Association said that the permanent Lok Adalat would be a feather in the cap of the Bar which is celebrating its 125th year celebration.

The permanent Lok Adalat would take up disputes relating to issues such as transport, electricity, post and telegraph, water, sanitation and insurance for settlement. The Adalat would be inaugurated by Karnataka High Court Judge V. Gopalagowda who is also the Executive Chairman of Karnataka State Legal Services Authority. The High Court Chief Justice Mr.

Cyriac Joseph would preside over the function, he said.

He said that during Lok Adalat held during August to October 2006, 520 cases including criminal, civil and motor vehicle cases have been settled and a total compensation of Rs 3.31 crore had been paid in the 382 MV cases.

In the Lok Adalat held on June 16, 60 cases have been settled with the insurance claim settlement of Rs.5.42 lakh, he added.
