Congressmen seek Guv intervention in poor law
Dehra Dun, July 20 (UNI) Miffed over the alleged bid on the life of a Congress leader at Uddhamsingh Nagar district of Uttarakhand a few days ago, Congressmen here today held a procession to the Governor's House and submitted a memorandum to him seeking his intervention.
Around 300 Congressmen, including former and present MLAs and office bearers, gathered at the Congress Bhavan and then proceeded towards Raj Bhavan under the leadership of state Congress Chief Harish Rawat and Leader of Opposition Harak Singh Rawat raising slogans against the BJP Government in the state for 'deteriorating' law and order situation.
However, the procession was intercepted by the police force half a kilometre away from Raj Bhavan. About 51 Congress leaders were allowed to cross the barricade under police supervision. The representatives met Governor Sudarshan Agarwal and handed a memorandum seeking his intervention.
Former Health Minister Tilak Raj Behad, who was attacked in Uddhamsingh Nagar district on July 17, personally narrated the incident to the Governor.
In the memorandum, the Congress has stated that despite an attack on the former minister, no security for him was enhanced by the government. Relating many other attacks on Congress leaders in the past since the BJP government took over from the Congress, the memorandum pointed towards the deteriorating state of law and order.
Mr Rawat said many BJP members were regularly intimidating Congress members and framing them in false criminal charges on the pretext of finding faults in developmental works carried out by them. He also flayed the BJP government for not allowing a CBI probe on the 'murder' of a woman reportedly involved with one BJP leader.
Leader of Opposition Harak Singh Rawat, taking a dig at the BJP government, said despite raising questions in the recent Assembly Session, the case of sexual harrassment of a BJP woman leader by one of the party's district President was being pressed down by the government. He said the crime graph in the state was soaring high and the general public was feeling unsafe.
