CMS institutes awards for TV News in Telugu

Hyderabad, Jul 20 (UNI) To promote meaningful Television news and encourage high standards of professionalism, the Centre for Media Studies (CMS) has instituted Awards of Excellence for Telugu Television news bulletins from this year.

In a statement, CMS Chairman N Bhaskara Rao said it was more than a decade since Telugu news was first telecast by Doordarshan in 1984 in Black and White in Andhra Pradesh. During those 23-years, Telugu Television Journalism has come of age and today eight channels were putting out news. Three of them were exclusive news channels.

He said the awards would be in four categories-best bulletin for holistic news coverage, best overall bulletin in respect of language, presentation and technical values, best reporting and best anchor. All channels putting out Telugu news bulletins, including exclusive news channels, with a standing of two years would be considered for the awards.

A jury, comprising eminent mediapersons, would select the winners.

Dr Bhaskar Rao has revealed that with a view to make the awards more transparent and reflective of public opinion, CMS would organise comprehensive field survey on Television news and also discussions with media experts on state-of-art of Telugu news channels in Andhra Pradesh.

CMS, with over two decades of experience, has emerged as an inter-disciplinary professional body in the country with a wide range of concerns in communication studies, media research and social development.
