5 lakh houses for poor in 3 years: Minister

Bangalore, July 20 (UNI) Karnataka had built five lakh houses for the poor under various State and Centre-sponsored schemes since 2004, Housing Minister D T Jayakumar informed the Legislative Council here today.

In a reply to Ms Shobha Karandlaje (BJP), the Minister said over Rs 1471 crore had been spent on construction of 517,779 houses under Ashraya, Ambedkar, Indira Awaz Schemes.

The minister also informed even as work on over 2,24,394 houses were in various stage, construction of 213,713 houses would be taken up.

According to a survey conducted in 2003, over 25 lakh people in both rural and urban areas had no shelter of their own and government proposed to construct over 5,20,000 houses during 2007-08 under various schemes.
