Villagers pull down Tata Motors boundary wall at Singur

Singur, July 19 (UNI) Police bursted some tear gas canisters when a local violent mob clashed with them after pulling down a portion of the boundary wall of Tata Motors Small Car Project here this morning.

A large contingent of police rushed to the spot as the villagers refused to leave and enganged in pitch battle with the securitymen amid rains.

SDPO, Chandernagar, Kalyan Mukherjee said the villagers under the banner of Krishi Jami Raskha Committee pulled down about 8-foot wide boudnary wall of the proposed factory at Khaserveri village taking advantage of the rain. When the policemen, stationed in nearby camps, arrived at the spot, the villagers attacked them with stones and other objects, he added .

''We had to burst few round of tear gas canisters to disperse the mob;'' the SDPO said.

However, despite being chased away the villagers kept regrouping and continued to strike at policemen from differnt directions.

Trinamool Congress leader Becharam Manna claimed the villagers had also dismantled a temporary police camp at Beraberi Purbapara.

However, there was no confirmation from the police in this regard.
