Retired IAS officer should conduct probe into collapse

Mumbai, July 19 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) standing committee chairman Ravindra Waikar today said they had urged Mayor to conduct a probe into the building collapse at Borivali in North Mumbai by a retired IAS officer.

One wing of the three-winged residential-cum-shopping building, Laxmi Chhaya, at Borivali in western suburbs, crumbled last evening.

Talking to reporters here this afternoon, Mr Waikar said ''We had talks with Mayor Shubha Raul and urged her to appoint a retired IAS officer to conduct fair inquiry into the building collapse so that guilty should be punished.'' When it was brought to his notice that Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had already ordered judicial inquiry in the matter, he said it needs some expertise, who should have knowledge of building construction, especailly Mumbai's buildings.

Meanwhile, the death roll in the mishap has risen to 26.

Mr Waikar said the corporation will publish a list of all 'dangerous buildings' in the metropolis in the newsapers so that people will become aware about their residential structures.
