Rain eases, flood levels remain high in K'taka rivers

Bangalore, July 19 (UNI) The intensity of Southwest monsoon came down in the coastal and ghat districts of Karnataka, bringing hopes of reduction in the flood levels in Cauvery basin and other rivers in Karnataka.

Officials said in Mysore district, levels in Cauvery and its tributary Kabini, remained high inundating hundreds of houses and submerging large tracts of standing crops in Nanjangud and T Narasipur taluks. Over 1.3 lakh cusecs of water was being discharged totally from K R Sagar and Beechnahalli dam across Kabini.

The inflow into the Krishna Raja Sagar dam rose to 76,349 cusecs.

Since the reservoir was full at 124.8 ft, the discharge was stepped up to 76,349 cusces.

In Kabini, the level stood at 2281.91 ft against the full level of 2284 ft. The entire inflow of 55,000 cusecs was being released downstream.

Upstream Hemvathi reservoir in Hassan district, which touched the full level 10 days ago, continued to receive steady inflows even though the rains subsided in its catchment areas. The level was 2921 ft against the full level of 2922 ft. The inflow of 8825 cusecs was let out.

Linganamakki across Sharavati river in Shimoga district was fast filling up following heavy inflows of 64,000 cusecs. The level rose to 1808 ft against the maximum storage capacity of 1819 ft.

Subramanya recorded the highest rainfall 10 cm in the state while Dharmasthala recorded 7 cm.

The water level in Alamatti reservoir in Bagalkot district across Krishna river was 517.5 m against the full level of 519 m. The inflow was 96,000 cusecs and outflow 49,500 cusecs. In downstream Narayanapur reservoir in Gulbarga district, the level stood at 490.6 ft. The inflow was 50,000 cusecs while the discharge was 49,500 cusecs.
