Cops turn water cannons on Congress workers

Gandhinagar, July 19 (UNI) Police today turned water cannons on Congress workers who tried to forcibly gain entry into the Gujarat Assembly premises.

Police personnel, posted at the Vidhan Sabha for the Presidential poll and the two-day Monsoon Session which began from today, used water cannons when the Congress workers refused to heed instructions not to enter the premises.

As many as 40 Congress workers were later detained by the police for unruly behaviour.

The Congress workers had assembled at the spot where Leader of Opposition Arjun Modhwadia had commenced a 72-hour fast, that ended today, to protest against the state government's unwillingness to table a Public Accounts Committee report on the Sujalam Sufalam scheme. The Congress workers later tried to force entry into the Assembly premises.

However, Mr Modhwadia was not affected by the water cannons as he had to enter the Assembly to vote in the Presidential elections.
