Top LeT commander killed in Doda

Jammu, July 18 (UNI) A top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander Abu Umar, was today gunned down by the security forces at Bhaderwah in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, a senior police officer said.

However, a woman was also killed, he added.

In a pre-dawn operation, on a tip-off, troops of four Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and state police cordoned off a house at Haveli Mohalla in Bhaderwah wherein the LeT commander -- involved in the killing of Deputy Superintendent of Police Shally Singh of J&K Police's Special Operations Group recently -- had taken a shelter.

''When Abu Umar was challenged by the troops, he opened indiscriminate fire and attempted to slip into a nearby house.

The ultra lobed a grenade and fired at the door, killing a woman inhabitant on the spot,'' SSP Doda Manohar Singh told UNI.

The victim was identified as Mahira Begum, wife of Abdul Qayoom.

An AK rifle, three magazines, a binocular and grenades were among the large quantity of arms and ammunition recovered from the site of operation, he added.
