SP forms committee to probe Sitapur custodial death

Lucknow, July 18 (UNI) After censuring the Mayawati government over the law and order situation in the aftermath of Dhannidih episode, the Samajwadi Party today formed a committee to probe the Sitapur custodial death case.

According to a party release here, the committee is headed by senior SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav.

The committee will visit the village of the victim tomorrow.

Former UP minister Ambika Chaudhary, MLA Narendra Verma, Mahendra Singh, Radhe Shyam Jaiswal, Anoop Gupta and Ram Pal Rajvanshi are the other committee members.

According to reports, Ramu had allegedly committed suicide in police custody in Sitapur district on Sunday evening.

He was summoned by the Manpur police of Sitapur in a case of elopement recording his statement. However, Ramu went to the police station lavatory and hanged himself.

UP government had suspended six policemen yesterday.

Earlier, a committee was also formed by the SP under the leadership of former UP assembly speaker Mata Prasad Pandey to probe the Dhannidih episode, where women from the minority community were raped.

SP leaders had also created ruckus on the same issue in the assembly budget session.
