Rivers swelling with heavy downpour

Lucknow, July 18 (UNI) The water level in several rivers, including Ganga and Ghagra, has been on the rise, following heavy downpour in Eastern Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hrs.

According to Central Water Commission here, Basti recorded the maximum rainfall at 331 mm, followed by Ayodhya (311), Kakrahi (214), Balrampur (214), Chandreep Ghat (221), Sultanpur (150), Mukhlispur (123) and Kanpur (105).

There were reports of showers in several cities, including Lucknow, Basti, Mau, Sant Kabir Nagar, Balrampur, Ayodhya, Siddharth Nagar, Rae Bareli, Sitapur and Bahraich.

The water level of Ganga, however, was below the danger level, even as heavy rainfall had lashed Varanasi, Ghazipur, Kanpur, Fatehgarh and Ballia.

Besides, the water level of Ghagra and Gomti rivers had increased due to heavy showers in Turtipar, Kartniyaghat, Ayodhya, Sitapur and Jaunpur.

According to reports from Siddharth Nagar, the Badhganga, Ghagra, Kuano, Rapti and Gandhak rivers were swelling due to rains.

At least 12 people had been injured in rain-related incidents in Mau. Ghagra river in the district was about to touch the red mark.

According to the met department, heavy rainfall might lash several places in the state in the next 24 hrs.
